“Emotion is not opposed to reason; our emotions assign value to experiences and thus are the foundation of reason.”

― Bessel A. van der Kolk, The Body Keeps the Score

I believe that every person has intrinsic worth and the capacity for resilience. I take a client-centered approach to treatment and strive to explain why we are doing what we are doing so that you can be fully informed. Therapy offers a safe space to explore difficult topics and contact your personal wisdom. My goal in counseling is to come alongside you to learn how you understand and experience the world, and from there to provide you with the tools to empower yourself to make choices about how to live a life that better aligns with your personal values and goals.
In life, there is so much to fear and to avoid. Often, the strategies we use to escape our pain only serve to sap our time and energy and end up moving us further away from the kind of person we want to be. Learning to face and accept painful realities can open up the space for more joy. When we learn to be more conscious of where we spend our energy and how we respond to challenges, we can interrupt patterns that are no longer serving us and commit to what matters most.
My primary treatment methods include Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), narrative approach, Internal Family Systems (IFS), somatic work, and mindful self-compassion strategies. My goal is to help you cope with difficult thoughts, behaviors, and emotions in order to accept the past, be mindful of the present, and work towards a meaningful future.

My Approach to Therapy

 FAQs

  • It all begins with the free consult call. I will ask you about your concerns and you will have a chance to ask me about yours. Then, if it is a good fit, we will schedule an intake session. You will need to be sure to complete all consent documents before this appointment. The intake is 60-75 min long, and will include many questions about your life, your symptoms, and your goals. After the intake assessment, I will use your responses to make a diagnosis, as well as create a treatment plan. At the second session, we will review this diagnosis and plan together, and you will confirm or edit the plan as needed.

  • After the intake, we will meet regularly for 50-60 min each session to work together towards your mental health goals. Most clients start by scheduling every week or every other week, based on their availability and the intensity of their concerns. As you begin to grow in your coping skills and need less support, we may decrease session frequency.

  • No, at this time I am only able to offer telehealth appointments.

  • Counseling is a collaborative effort. I acknowledge that I do not have all the answers; I am open to feedback and will adjust my style based on your needs and preferences. If there is ever a point at which you feel our work together is no longer serving you, I am happy to connect you with someone who might be more appropriate for you and your needs.

Outside of my scope:

Some concerns and conditions are outside of my scope of practice, which means I may not be able to accept you as a client or I may require you to have additional members of your care team as a condition of working together. My policy for counseling with clients who have an eating disorder is that they must also work with a dietician. For those struggling with mood concerns such as anxiety, depression, and bipolar disorder I strongly encourage you to be in contact with a psychiatrist or primary care doctor. Of course, I will provide referrals and support for those who are open to doing the work but do not currently have access to the appropriate providers. I do not accept clients who have made a suicide attempt within the past year, who are court mandated for therapy, who are diagnosed with schizophrenia, or who require access to on-call support. If you have any questions or concerns about whether your specific concern is within my scope, feel free to schedule a consultation to discuss further.
